Jetty 1905 sits at the very end of Swakopmund's historic jetty, with the Atlantic on three sides. Getting a restaurant out there took years of rescue work on a structure the sea had almost claimed.
How the jetty was saved
In June 2006 the Lighthouse Group was awarded the rights to "take care" of the jetty and make it viable, together with the rights to construct an oyster bar at the end of the structure. The group took on maintaining the renovated jetty and keeping it from becoming run down and unsafe as it had been in previous years, which had resulted in its closure for seven years.
At that point the jetty had only been renovated to roughly halfway. The rest of the structure was cut away and left to the elements. Quinton's wish was to save the portion left to disintegrate, and after engineers, divers and experts deemed the seaward portion more suitable to carry the restaurant structure, the Lighthouse Group undertook the task of renovating and rescuing it, restoring the jetty once again to its full glory.
Milestones
- 6 August 2010: the restored jetty is opened to the public by Swakopmund's Mayor
- 14 October 2010: Jetty 1905 opens its doors
- June 2014: rough seas, high water, a spring tide and strong currents damage the restaurant, forcing it to close for repairs
- Two months later: the doors open once more after renovation and some remodelling
What to expect
The restaurant is located at the point of the jetty, with a public viewing deck above it so that every member of the public can enjoy the view from the end. Jetty 1905 has become one of Swakopmund's leading restaurants, and travellers book well in advance to secure a table and enjoy the spectacular view, excellent service and delicious dishes.
